Housing: We house all of our bearded dragons in 4' long x 2' wide x 2' high PVC enclosures. This type of material retains heat very well.
Lighting & Heat: Correct light and heat is crucial for the health and longevity of your bearded dragon. You will need a UVB tube light, which will provide your bearded dragon with the necessary amount of UVB needed to not only survive but to thrive as well, allowing it to live a long and happy life.
Bearded Dragons are native to the deserts of Australia. While in captivity, they require daily heat and a basking spot inside of their enclosure, to mimic the desert sun. You will need a reptile specific basking spot bulb. Bearded dragons appreciate basking temperatures between 95 degrees and 110 degrees, with ambient temperatures in the 80's on the cool side and in the 90's on the hot side of your enclosure. The wattage of basking bulb that you choose will be completely dependant upon the material of your enclosure along with the ventilation inside of it. I would suggest locating a basking fixture that has a dimmer switch on it, this switch will allow you better control over your heat. Bearded dragons need light and heat on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours to allow them time to cool down through the night, mimicking desert conditions - I would suggest a 12 hour cycle (ex. On at 9a off at 9p).
Diet & Nutrition: We feed all of our bearded dragons live feeders only. Our staple feeders consist of Black Soldier Fly Larvae and Dubia Roaches. On occasion we will offer superworms, mealworms, wax worms, and hornworms. Bearded dragons do require daily calcium as part of their nutritional needs - we dust feeders thoroughly with calcium before offering. Bearded dragons get most of their water needs through their daily bugs. You can also offer water in a dish, under supervision. We also offer our bearded dragons salad greens daily. We offer greens approximately one hour after lights on. An hour or so after this we offer bugs. Don't worry too much if your baby dragon is not showing that much interest in their greens, it has been my experience that as the babies age they will naturally switch over to their greens as well. You can also offer greens such as cilantro, doing so might entice them to eat.
Substrate & Decor - We use a black mat as substrate in all of our enclosures. This mat is easy to clean and provides cushioning for their joints. We use solid surfaces such as brick and tile for their basking spot. These materials are a great option, as they will provide them with the necessary belly heat. You can also place items such as branches, reptile safe wood, and flat rocks inside of their enclosure. These decor items serve as enrichment for your bearded dragon. Bearded dragons like to climb so giving them items that safely allow for this activity is a great idea.
